Within Panoramic Kumoun at an altitude of 1938 mtrs above sea level lies the district of Nainital. Its snow-capped peaks, verdant valleys, Rolling Meadows and crystal lakes have beckoned lovers of nature since ages dotted with lakes, Nainital has earned the epithet of ‘lakes District’ of India.
Here is a list of top places to visit in Nanital:
Naini Lake :
The lifeblood of this lake town, legend has it that the deep green lake is one of the emerald green eyes of Parvati, Shiva’s wife. It is believed that the modern Naina Devi Temple at the northern end of the lake is the spot where her eye fell, after Vishnu chopped up her body and scattered it all over to stop Shiva’s cosmic dance of destruction. Enjoy a rowboat or pedal boat ride around the lake or hire a yacht from the Nainital Boat Club. Not just the lake, there’s much to do on the promenade too. Shops and restaurants line the entire edge of the lake and you can hunt for can shawls, local handicrafts, honey, fruit juices and pickles.
Snow View :
An exciting activity for all is the ropeway Aerial Express to Snow View (7447 ft). Catch majestic views of the Himalayas dominated by the sacred Nanda Devi. Alternately, you can also ride up to Snow View on ponies or horses available at the north end of the Mall.
Dorothy’s Seat :
Also known as Tiffin’s Top, it derives its name from of an English lady Mrs. Kellet Dorothy, who was killed in an air crash. Tiffin Top is at a short walk of about 4 km from the lake and provides an excellent view of the Himalayas and the city.
Hanumangarh Temple and St. John Church :
Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, this temple is known for its fabulous sunset views. Also ensure that you visit one of the oldest buildings of Nainital, St. John Church, built by the British.
Land’s End :
About 4 km from the town, Land’s End is known for its magnificent view of the plains and the beautiful Khurpa Tal surrounded by the village and dense pine forests.
Gurney House :
Located atop Ayarpatta Hill, Gurney House, former home of Jim Corbett is located amidst thick oak, fir, deodar, pine and rhododendron. Today it is a museum of Corbett memorabilia.
Nainital Zoo :
Home to high altitude species of animals, this zoo is extremely well-maintained. An interesting feature here is the sponsorship programme that lets you sponsor the food and maintenance of the animal you like.
Guano Hills :
Located in Pangot Village, Guano Hills is a treat for nature-lovers. It offers excellent options for walks through oak, bamboo and deodar forests. It also offers sightings of some rare birds including the black chinned babbler and the grey woodpecker.
